Director of Music Ministry ~ Job Description

BACKGROUND:
First United Methodist Church (FUMC) of Coppell is seeking a Director of Music Ministry to coordinate and
manage all music programs within the church. With over 2,000 members, FUMC of Coppell currently offers 3
Sunday morning services (2 that offer a traditional style of worship and one that offers a blended contemporary
style). This Fall, the church will be adding a 4th service that is more youth-focused with a youth praise band.
Coppell, Texas is a quaint, tight-knit, family-centered community on the outskirts of Dallas near DFW airport.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Director of Music Ministry is responsible for the vision, direction and oversight of all music within the life
of the congregation, which includes:
•Managing a music staff of 4-5 part-time people
•Providing leadership for the current music program: traditional choirs (separate adult, youth and children),
orchestra, hand bells (separate adult, youth and children), contemporary worship band, and a newly created
youth praise band.
•Working with self-directed ensembles, the Fine Arts Academy, special musical productions throughout the
year, weddings and funerals.
NOTE: Initially, special emphasis will be placed on working with the contemporary and youth services.

QUALIFICATIONS:
The successful candidate must be…
•Passionate … they must have a passion for spiritual worship with a visible and contagious love for the Lord
(i.e. dynamic, engaging, nurturing and spirit-filled… who can stir the coals and ignite the fire)
•Visionary … who understands and respects Methodist heritage and theology but also has a vision for the
future and a desire to lead the church to embrace diversity in musical worship (someone who is not afraid to
take some risk and stretch with meaningful creativity)
•Both a leader and a team player …who can recognize and utilize the different gifts and strengths of the
current staff and volunteers to integrate music with other programs and achieve results
•Resourceful, self-motivated and organized…who sees what needs to be done and makes it happen
•Committed … to being a part of the church family, serving in the community and involved with the
congregation

EXPERIENCE:
Masters Degree in music preferred
•Experience with the various styles of traditional sacred music and classical choral direction for large groups
(including youth and/or children). Experience with instrumental conducting a plus.
•Experience with contemporary praise bands (including band construction, writing and arranging music,
sound systems, multi-media, etc.)… experience with start-up services a plus
•Experience managing full or part-time music staff as well as recruiting / coordinating volunteers
