“…Show me your faith apart from your works, and I by my works will show you my faith.”James 2:18

Meet Rev. Tom Palmer

Tom Palmer is a native of beautiful “Oak Cliff–Oh.”  If you don’t know the backstory of “Oak Cliff-Oh,” stop by Tom’s office for a cup of joe sometime (Tom has never met a cup of coffee that he wouldn’t drink.) In Oak Cliff, he grew to love Tex-Mex, Aunt Stella’s Sno-Cones, Peanut Butter Pie at the Bishop’s Grill, Steven’s Park Golf Course, and all things Dallas sports.

In high school, Tom was a little on the small side for 4A Texas high school football (go figure!), so he became a yell-leader at Dallas Kimball and still has his megaphone in the attic as proof.  Sensing God’s nudge into ministry, Tom then received his BA in Psychology at Oral Roberts University before completing his Masters and Doctoral Studies at Asbury Theological Seminary in Kentucky.

On the first Sunday of official United Methodist pastoral ministry (April 5, 1987), Tom met the lovely Indiana native Lisa Ann Elliott, who was studying occupational therapy at Texas Woman’s University and was an active part of the College Fellowship at Asbury UMC in Denton.   After months of friendship and courtship, they were married on July 1, 1989.

In the span of almost 30 years of ministry, Tom and Lisa have led six different congregations across North Texas.  They have three children, Caleb, Jacob, and Olivia.  Since 2011, they have also fostered six different infants/toddlers through the Methodist Children’s Home.  In his spare time, Tom hangs out and watches movies with the family, runs, reads, and enjoys massive quantities of ice cream, even in the winter.

Tom has a passion for the church of Jesus Christ and how the community of faith can rise up to love, serve, and transform a community with the love of Jesus–one relationship at a time.  He also values the United Methodist expression of Christian faith, with its powerful emphasis on growing in the grace of Jesus Christ, an open table of communion, and practical service in the world.  Tom believes in the power of family, and especially the eternal family of God.  He is deeply honored and blessed to share the journey of faith with God’s people at FUMC Coppell and in the surrounding communities.

Who are some of your influences/inspirations?

Other than Jesus, John Wesley, and my wife (quite a trio!), William Wilberforce, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Rosa Parks, Mother Theresa, and when I was a boy, Roger Staubach.
